What is the Shoreham Youth Team?
The Shoreham Youth Team was started in 2008 to encourage young teenagers to race and challenge them to work as a team on a keelboat. Today the team forms part of the very active youth and OnBoard scheme at Sussex Yacht Club.
The chosen boat for the team to concentrate on is the Sonar keelboat which is 23 feet long and has a draft of 1.2m; it was designed by Bruce Kirby and is the nominated Paralympic boat.
Sonars are sailed with 5 crew and the aim of the team has always been to meet the standard required to successfully compete in Cowes Week. This is a rolling 18 month program with the outgoing teams taking on the winter training for the next budding keelboat sailors.
Our Shoreham Youth Teams have been going to Cowes since 2008 and results have continually improved. In 2012 the team achieved 3rd in class and 3rd youth team with the average age of 16.
